ALUMINUM 6061 BAR, ROD AND SHAPES — MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Aluminum 6061 rolled, drawn, or cold-finished rod, bar and shapes mechanical properties at room temperature are shown below for T6, T651, T4 and T451 tempers per MMPDS-01: Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization.

Input Parameters

inch

* For extrusions, mechanical properties are based on the thickness at the time of quench.

Notes

  • e — edge distance (in loading direction), D — hole diameter.
  • If the service direction is unknown, use the lesser of longitudinal or transverse properties.
  • Allowable stresses for welded structures are generally lower. Typical welded 6061-T6 (ksi): Ftu 24, Fty 20, Fcy 20, Fsu 15, Fsy 12, Fbru 50, Fbry 30.

Definitions

A-Basis: Lower of T99 or specification minimum (S-basis). T99: 99% population expected to meet/exceed value with 95% confidence.

S-Basis: Minimums from standards/specifications; statistical basis not defined.

Longitudinal: Parallel to working/flow direction. Long Transverse: Width direction. Short Transverse: Thickness direction.

Solution heat treatment: Heat to dissolve constituents, hold, then rapidly cool to retain them in solution.

Young’s modulus: Slope of stress–strain (uniaxial) within proportional limit. Poisson’s ratio: Lateral strain / longitudinal strain. Shear stress: Stress parallel to a section. Stress: Force per unit area.
