Poisson’s ratio (ν) is the negative ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain for a material
under uniaxial stress within the elastic range. It describes how a material contracts laterally when stretched,
or expands when compressed.
Most metals have Poisson’s ratios between 0.25 and 0.35. The relationship with Young’s modulus (E)
and shear modulus (G) is:
ν = (E / 2G) − 1
